Capitalism: A Fundraiser [11 Nov 2009|06:31pm]

Capitalism: A Fundraiser

Help raise funds for Sydney's Human Rights Arts and Film Festival (HRAFF - http://www.hraff.org.au) by attending tomorrow night's 7pm screening of Capitalism: A Love Story, the new Michael Moore film.

7pm, Cinema 6
George St Cinemas
George St, Sydney

Capitalism: A Love Story, Michael Moore's new documentary, will explore the root causes of the global economic meltdown and take a comical look at the corporate and political shenanigans that culminated in what Moore described as 'the biggest robbery in the history of this country' - the massive transfer of U.S. taxpayer money to private financial institutions.

Hey, guys. Is anybody interested in purchasing two tickets to the Flaming Lips? They're general admission at the Hordern Pavilion for July 28th. They're notorious for their amazing shows and I am totally cut that I won't be able to make it.

I'm asking $165, and I'll cover express/registered post. Leave a comment here or email me at ohcharlie@gmail.com

women's film festival - x-posted [03 Nov 2008|07:14pm]

Hi all,
I'm putting together a film festival to promote women's cinema and video art in reaction to the following:

The film industry shuts out both women filmmakers and audiences. Making just more than half the population, there are huge numbers of women who belong to at least one of these two parties. The problem is not a lack of women who wish to work as filmmakers: the numbers of film school graduates are evenly male and female. Despite this, only 4% of directors are women.

In the history of the Academy Awards, only three women have been nominated for Best Director (none of them have won). Sofia Coppola was the last woman to be nominated, in 2003, for Lost in Translation. Prior to this, Jane Campion was nominated in 1993 for The Piano. The third, and the first woman ever to be nominated, was Lina Wertmüller in 1976 for her film Seven Beauties. There has never been an Academy Award nomination for a woman cinematographer.

I am VERY EAGER for submissions of all varieties of film - shorts, features, video art, doccos, etc. - please drop me a line at adolphusmaritime@gmail.com and I will send you an application form.

Please consider!

The $500 Man Bites God Music Video Competition [08 Sep 2008|01:58pm]

Man Bites God are bribing aspiring film makers with a chance to win AU$500 by making a music video featuring a Man Bites God song of their choice.

“A number of fans have made their own music videos for the band over the last few years and we wanted to recognise their efforts with a competition”, explains the band’s drummer and professional video director Chris Tomkins. “We’re not expecting anything amazingly polished for the $500 prize, we just want to see what great ideas are out there.”

The competition runs until November and is a simple as choosing a Man Bites God song, making a video and uploading to Man Bites God’s YouTube channel in order to be judged in November.

The band are looking for anything from surreal to literal, live-action, machinema, animation or some other technique that hasn’t been invented yet.

Details of the competition are available on the band's website http://www.manbitesgod.com or by watching the video on their youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/manbitesgod.

[11 Jul 2008|09:22pm]

I looked and didn't see anything disallowing this, but if it's a problem tell me and I'll edit/delete/whip myself in penance etc.

Music fans of Sydney! I have been directed to this community after I toddled along to The Metro the other day to purchase tickets to The Fratellis (playing August 6th) only to be told it had sold out. It was suggested to me that everybody who's anybody around here probably uses this comm and so I've come to ask - anyone got a spare ticket for sale? Someone got you one and you can't make it? Freak whirlwind caused your date for the evening to mysteriously disappear? Anything like that?

I'll hunt around for some more active music communities to grovel in as well, but any help is appreciated :)
